While many youth groups discover Montreat through our annual youth and young adults events, that isn’t the only way they can experience Montreat. Retreats are another vital part of church ministry which also offer youth the opportunity to form meaningful connections. For those who know Montreat primarily as a youth conference destination, it might be surprising to learn that we host hundreds of retreats each year. Some groups plan intergenerational retreats where youth participate alongside the broader church family, while others — including many Presbyteries — host retreats designed specifically for youth. This might lead you to ask “what should we plan for? A youth retreat or youth conference?” The answer, at least in our opinion, is both! But here, we’ll focus on a few reasons why you might consider hosting a youth retreat on Montreat Conference Center’s campus.
Deeper Connection with God
People seek retreats and pilgrimages to disconnect from daily distractions and listen more carefully for God’s voice. Montreat’s appeal lies in its reputation as a “thin place” — a space where the sacred feels especially close and accessible.

Stronger Group Formation
Nothing accelerates group bonding like shared experiences. Youth groups often rent one of our lodges, creating a self-contained environment where they can cook together, play games, and build relationships that last a lifetime. These intimate settings foster a kind of authentic community that’s harder to achieve in weekly meetings back home.
Meaningful Service
Interest in local service has grown significantly since Hurricane Helene impacted our area in September 2024. Your group can partner with long-term recovery organizations or grassroots community volunteer programs to make a lasting difference in the lives of our neighbors.
Pure Fun
Between service and reflection, there’s plenty of time for adventure. Groups can enjoy guided or self-led hikes through our mountain trails, utilize our recreation facilities, explore the art of rock hoping in Flat Creek, or venture into nearby Black Mountain and Asheville for shopping and local culture.

Planning a youth retreat means creating space for all of these elements — spiritual growth, community building, service, and joy. Our team is ready to help you design an experience that embodies our core values of hospitality, connection, and stewarding God’s creation while serving your group’s unique needs.
